		<description>Rhythms of Texas: Institute of Texan Cultures

H.I. Feldman Nominee
Advanced Design Studio
with Michael Imber and George Knight
Texas culture is comprised of a diverse set of values, beliefs, languages, practices and artifacts of society. This project looks to the rhythms within the many genres of Texas music as a lens through which the diversified practices of various cultures manifest themselves by means of cultural diffusion, confluence, conflict and contradiction. Music in Texas reveals cultural confluence and conflict across urban and rural geographies, race, class and ethnicity. The aim is to spatially and visually manifest various rhythms of Texas music in a way that conveys a sense of multiplicity and cultural pluralism.
Following an analysis of the Spanish mission typology - an origin point of both the confluence and conflict of cultures in Texas - the project aims to reappropriate the mission typology by spatializing the rhythms and proportions of Texas music genres. The design and program of the Institute of Texas Cultures incites a culturally pluralist environment to preserve and transmit the cultural heritage of Texas while simultaneously encouraging the evolution of Texas culture by means of innovation and discovery.

How can an institution instigate change?In 1943, a mining explosion killed 74 coal miners at Smith Coal Mine in the town of Bearcreek, Montana. This disaster devastated the local economy and left families with an immense sense of loss. The town population has since decreased from 3,000 to 117 residents. The site of Smith Mining operations exists today in a state of ruins, but continues to be of palpable significance to the local community. The industrial ruins exist as a cultural artifact that converts the vast expanse of Montana’s landscape from a “space” to “place”. It provides an anchor to a landscape that is in a sense “other”.

The design of Carbon County Center for the Arts intends to provide a place for both visiting artists and community members to immerse themselves within the history and cultural memory of Carbon County while also encouraging individuals to consider the future. The art center would restore the community's access to this memory while simultaneously reviving the site and local economy.
Inspired by the character and form of the underground mine shaft, a long linear memorial dedicated to the victims of the explosion acts as a datum between artists' living space, making space and the mining ruins. A reflection pool at one end of the memorial allows community members and artists to contemplate mortality, the lives of those displaced by mining activities and the environmental implications of extraction on the landscape. Community spaces such as performance space, gallery and classrooms are built in the footprints of former buildings on site. New buildings are intentionally placed behind the crest of the hilltop, sensitively being respectful to the context of the ruins. As visitors leave, a view of Bearcreek is framed by the memorial terminus.

This design provides a seat for high-top tables. Inspired by Cubist artwork - in which objects are broken up and represented in abstract form - the design of the chair brings together three concerns: faceting of form, transparency and multiplicity.

Joinery methods include miter join, lap join and loose-tenon.

		<description>A Space for Equity

Geneva, NYHobart and William Smith Colleges

Today, women currently make up 19 percent of licensed architects in the United States, experience lower levels of pay at all levels, and report lower levels of professional or job satisfaction. Initially an exploration into gender inequality within the profession of architecture, the aim of this thesis has broadened to consider the effects of political and economic systems that reinforce, perpetuate, or reflect patriarchal norms and horizontal and vertical occupational segregation. This thesis utilized historical inquiry, statistical data and psychological and economic literature to explore the implication of male-dominated environments on both professional and academic settings.

In this research process, the nature of competition among women in male-dominated environments, and the socially constructed behaviors used to manage such competition, is explored for how they help to further gender inequity. Drawing upon histories of woman-based or feminist art practice and site-based public art, the project employed participatory methods of spatial production, feminist social practice and community development. The project culminated in a site-specific installation on the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges using knitting as a form of activism combined with personal comments by participants. This work ultimately sought to challenge existing political and economic systems that reinforce and perpetuate gender inequality.

The temporary installation transformed an object in space into a social space to promote and make visible the marginaized narratives of William Smith women. The process of this design was as significant as the final product. The construction of the space was a collaborative effort, engaging with the community of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

		<description>The Studiolio: Ideological Origins of Private Space

Retrospecta 44
The studiolo (“study-room”) is a manifestation of the compartmentalized domestic architecture of the Italian Renaissance. Originally used by learned clerics, it can be considered a descendant of the monk’s&#38;nbsp;cell. The studiolo generally consisted of a small room featuring a built-in desk, seat, and cupboard, but&#38;nbsp;the typology varies and evolves across space and time. In the painting Saint Jerome and His Study by&#38;nbsp;Antonello da Messina, the studiolo is “positioned inside a monumental but undefined space.”In&#38;nbsp;contrast, the painting Saint Augustine in His Study by Vittore Carpaccio depicts the studiolo as situated&#38;nbsp;within a domestic suite.

These paintings depict two contradictory notions attached to the history of the studiolo: the studiolo as&#38;nbsp; a humanist space for private contemplation, religious devotion and intellectual pursuit, and the studiolo as a place for social exchange, and conspicuous display. &#38;nbsp;Primary sources have often led scholars to&#38;nbsp; identify the studiolo as a patriarchal space in which the male owner displayed his individuality, wealth,&#38;nbsp; intellect and sovereignty over the household. &#38;nbsp;The boudoir has been interpreted as the female version of&#38;nbsp; the studiolo, but these definitions deserve further examination. These conceptions overlook differences in rulership in which under some sovereigns women could hold political positions, receive a humanist&#38;nbsp;education and maintain studioli, such as Eleonora d’Aragona and Isabella d’Este. The history of the studiolo requires a reexamination in its relationship to gendered division of labor, differing political&#38;nbsp;systems, primitive accumulation and the rise of capitalism.
This paper will use several case studies to explore the location and evolution of the studiolo within the domestic architecture of the Renaissance. Floor plans will be used to analyze the studiolo’s role in&#38;nbsp;reinforcing, reflecting, and perpetuating the division of labor manifested in political and economic systems. If the studiolo is a paradox in which public and private intersect, it’s history will be explored not only as a space of solitude and intellectual pursuit, but also as a space representing the power and&#38;nbsp;sovereignty of its owner.

&#60;img width="5735" height="7598" width_o="5735" height_o="7598" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6799c70efe177907a73c895cd83c911b6024e9948967e99badd7d0035d869385/S21_3313_PV_CarleC_Drawing.jpg" data-mid="128261964" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6799c70efe177907a73c895cd83c911b6024e9948967e99badd7d0035d869385/S21_3313_PV_CarleC_Drawing.jpg" /&#62;

The iconography in the studiolo of Isabella d’Este reflects and reinforces her role as a bourgeoisie woman in the age of the enlightenment. She must maintain imagery that bolsters her allowed role as a bourgeoisie woman of virtue who exists to raise male heirs in order to appease male visitors and diplomats perhaps uncomfortable with her position of power. The iconography, function and role of the bourgeoisie female studiolo must differ from that of the male studiolo in order to reify the division of labor necessary to the functioning of agrarian capitalism.

		<description>Transformable Interstice

Claremont, NH

Operating from 1837 to 1963 along the Sugar River, the Monadnock Mills Company was a vital factor in the growth and prosperity of Claremont, New Hampshire in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The design aims to carve into the decaying structure of Claremont’s post-industrial landscape in order to revitalize Monadnock Mills’ former functional use as a textile mill and to engender transformable spaces for job training facilities and food markets.

A series of glass conical forms cut against the horizontal grain of the mill building at its core, providing circulation space that runs parallel to a vertical library of manuals, textile patterns and recipe books. The composition of these glass forms facilitates bridging social capital, encouraging connections between groups through both observation and physical interaction. Transparent fabric ellipsoids grow from the glass core, dilineating soft boundaries for small markets and job training classrooms. The intersection of two movable fabric forms provides a hybrid, third space. These fabric forms are moveable and adaptable, allowing inhabitants to continuously redefine boundaries of space. &#60;img width="3076" height="1836" width_o="3076" height_o="1836" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/28b4e3d45f55a8b7f1aa19201022fe877a829a5ea7da8d65d202bc042893d7f2/Screen-Shot-2021-12-27-at-11.56.49-PM.png" data-mid="128357194" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/28b4e3d45f55a8b7f1aa19201022fe877a829a5ea7da8d65d202bc042893d7f2/Screen-Shot-2021-12-27-at-11.56.49-PM.png" /&#62;

New Haven Free Public Library Wilson Branch
New Haven, CTIn collaboration with:
Lindsay DuddyThe outbreak of COVID-19 both exacerbated and made increasingly visible existing social and economic inequalities. Safety measures to prevent the spread of the virus suddenly made public “third spaces” - such as libraries and community learning centers - inaccessible. These places provide safe and inclusive space for individuals to learn, exchange ideas and bulid relationships.

Access to free books and reading sources to underpriviledged members of our community can help to explain racism, protest and celebrate racial diversity. It is important, as designers, to help provide these opportunities to our local community.

This design for the Wilson Branch of New Haven’s Free Public Library helps to provide an intimate, accesible, safe space in which educational programs can extend outside the confines of the existing bulding. The structure is versatile and adaptable, comprised of units that can be organized into various different configurations based on programmatic needs.
